Anyone here a fan of NHL or the Canucks?

I’ve been a Canucks fan since 2008 when by a random chain of events I ended up living with two Canadian fellas from Vancouver and have luckily been to see them three times (Twice at the Rogers arena and once away at Ottawa) and have just been dismayed by their ability to look like one of the best teams in the League before falling apart against Pittsburgh or Chicago in the Stanley Cup when it matters. Clearly the Arsenal of the NHL.

Hopefully this year will be different as we move into the Playoffs in a months time. As it stands, these are the standings for the Canucks and they are dominating big time.

http://canucks.nhl.com/club/standings.htm?season=20102011&type=LEA.

But no one really cares about that. The Canucks need to get their hands on something they never have done before. This bad boy:

Anyone else interested… Or is it just me?

Also, my new favourite MLS team:

I always used to literally Richard ‘be’ the Canucks on NHLPA Hockey on the Megadrive, so I’ve got the most tenous support ever. A very fast team, they had,

Not really got an MLS team, but might start following the Portland Timbers (I did have a vague leaning toward the Kansas City Wizards, but the bonkers name-change has put me right off).

If I had to pick an NHL team it would probably be the Edmonton Oilers, purely because my cousin is from there and they are his team.

Massive Washington Capitals fan.

My brother lives out there and took me to a game a couple of years back, I didn’t particularly like Ice Hockey at the time but from the first minute I was absolutely hooked. The atmosphere is just brilliant.

Ever since, been glued to it.

Play offs coming up, business end of things is about to start.

Did you get to see Ovechkin? Massive regret of mine that I never saw him play live while I was out there.

I’m a Maple Leafs fan because I enjoy the torture. I also watch Manchester over here, and I follow Ak Bars Kazan in the Russian league purely because they have awesome shirts and they played Manchester (Storm at the time) in a friendly once.

I reckon Vancouver can do it this year. Apparently that Van/San Jose game was the best of the year so far, I’m going to put money on that being the West final. Leafs are playing well generally, but that loss the other night hasn’t helped them, I’m 50/50 as to whether we’ll make it. Minnesota are generally my team in the West, but I’d love to see Vancouver do well, they’re solid all the way through the team (well, Luongo tends to go west after April :P) and they’re a classy organisation. Plus, they’re Canadian, and the GWN is overdue another Cup. My dad is a Wings fan but loves the Sedins, so if the Wings go out early he’ll be rooting for the Canucks, and my brother is a Ranger.

Any hockey fans on here should read the Down Goes Brown (National Post) and Puck Daddy (Yahoo) blogs, great guys. They’re on Twitter as @DownGoesBrown and @wyshynski as well. How helpful am I? Another great guy is @JeffMarek, who is one of the HNIC reporters for CBC.

Let’s make this the ice hockey thread. I have a collection of 90 ice hockey pucks, and I play netminder. I was selected a number of times for the Great Britain inline team as well. My only achievement in life.

Good stuff! The Canucks can clinch their division tonight, and the Leafs have got Carolina. Leafs need to win every game against the teams around them now. This is a team that CAN make the play-offs, Reimer has been fantastic lately; I’d tipped Gustavsson but more heart problems and a woeful mid-season have shot my prediction out of the water. He has huge potential, and I’d love to see a Gustavsson/Reimer pairing next year, but rumour is that Burke is going to move for Bryzgalov in the summer.

Been a Wild fan since their inception and before that the Minnesota North Stars. Hovering around the playoffs at the moment but got some decent players seemingly always getting injured this season.

Good stuff, they were a truly dominant team. Get down there again before the end of the season!

Leafs won last night to stay in the 8th place race, and Canucks clinched the NW. It’s at times like this that I wonder why I don’t bet money on sport.

This is my first season following the NHL properly and I know the Rangers weren’t great last year but they seem to be doing better this year. (My choice of team if you hadn’t guessed)

Can anyone with a better knowledge of the NHL tell me, though, if they actually have a chance at the Stanley Cup or if this is just a lucky hot streak.
Thing is, I didn’t think they did have a shot, but they’ve been doing really well and just beat the Penguins who are meant to be really good. Aren’t they?

I watch my Kings regularly, or the Ducks when they’re on. I don’t watch much Hockey outside LA until the playoffs or when I happen to catch a game on ‘Versus’. I was watching Minnesota v Tampa and this shorthanded goal made me happy.

Great name…....Superb name…..

I’m still peeling myself off of the roof after the Leafs’ start to the season. Playoffs? Is it too early to imagine all the ways we can fuck this up before April?

Yeah I know.

Hard to blame the goal keeper because everyone thought the game was going to overtime but he lost concentration there. He tried to glove save it off the deck and that never ends well.

At least it distracted from the Kings 8-2 loss. I feel like I’ve had too much fun with Arsenal with the 8-2 it’s come back to bite be on the ass. Detroit looks decent though, with no Crosby I think Chicago, Boston, Philly and Detroit are the teams to beat. I’d put the Rangers just outside that group.

I’m going to be honest. This is my first season following the NFL and thanks to the late kick offs and my early work shifts I don’t even catch half the games unless they’re over the weekend. Still, I do the best I can.

I presume glove save off the deck means he was trying to save it on his glove side, right against the ice?
I’m taking on US sports one by one. Followed the Jets since the 2009 season playoffs (The AFC Champ. game against Indy was my first), then started following the Rangers at the end of last season, and I’m planning on starting with the Mets when that season starts next year.

Yeah he could have dropped down, spread out, and got his pads or stick on it. It was a lazy attempt because he wasn’t paying attention, he like everyone thought the game was going to OT.

As for missing games at least with baseball if you miss one or two games a week you can still watch 3 or 4 games in that same week. wink

Well one has to understand that in the NHL, you have 82 games in the season, and a possibility of 28 other games in the playoffs. That is a total of 110 games overall. So it would always be a better idea to give both keepers the chance to stay in shape as the season goes along. Most number 1 keepers play around 60-70 games, while elite keepers in teams that have shit 2nd keepers, like Brodeur for so long in NJ Devils (who played 75-80 during the season + all playoff games.)

A few years ago, the Montreal Canadians, my team to death by the way, played with 2 goalies rotating them through the season. Once they made it to the playoffs, they stuck to the goalie who was in form at that time and stuck to him. I think its always good to have 2 good keepers, but the the better one should always get the better amount of games.

To Vancouver Canucks fans, i like them when they make it to the playoffs and Canadians get eliminated, i root for them. Well i root for any Canadian team who lasts in the playoffs the longest, except for Maple Leafs. Then again, the ‘Nucks always end up choking when the push comes to shove.

Everything you say is discredited by your allegiance to the Habs. wink Great points though, in all seriousness. Also, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Habs, probably because of their steadfast commitment to the French language.

It looks to me like the Leafs are going to leave it until about late March if they decide to make the play-offs, and it’ll likely be a division battle with the Sens right to the wire. December was our first losing month this season, and January is going to be massive as we only have three or four road games. We’re 4-5-3 since November 1st at home, 3 OT losses in that time is an alarm bell, but we’ve got Tampa Bay, Ottawa, Buffalo and Winnipeg, all teams around us in the East during January as well. We need to be securing games before we risk OT against teams with a similar record to us. This team has some quality in all areas, but it’s spread rather thin. I think our goaltending has been better this year, consider we have second- and third-year NMs in our partnership. It’s nice that Kessel and Lupul are playing well, both are in the top scorer tables, but we need to be building more two- and three-game streaks if we are too get in to a comfortable play-off position.

Finally, the Winter Classic was a great advert for the sport, although it will be interesting to see the viewing figures, as it was competing for ratings with the Rose Bowl. The game had a great story and decent weather (I loved everyone getting excited about the weather), and I still think that Rangers could be the real deal this year. It’s a shame that Ilya Bryzgalov didn’t start, he seems to be trying hard to become a hockey cross between Dimitar Berbatov and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

What do you mean by “real deal”? Like Stanley Cup winning material or just playoff material?
I’ve just started following the Rangers at the start of this season having gotten interested slightly the season before, so I’m still learning, but it seems exciting how well they’re doing at the moment.
The Winter Classic was a great game. Watched it online, and found the ending so tense. Not all NHL games end like that do they? I don’t think my heart could take it if they did.

Anyone else think it’s odd how a 50/50 partnership between two goalies (i.e. Reimer and Gustavsson) works so much better in the NHL than in football?

The problem as of late, they have moved away from that commitment. I would like to see them come back to it. As of late, they have made a few draft picks and signing bringing in french players from the province. They have missed lots of opportunity the past decade to sign players from their own backyard to keep the team from going into ‘Dark Times’. Now, the future looks bright, it will take time though, but i have always wanted Montreal to sign more Canadian nationality players. Too many Europeans in the team.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against European players, I just feel like they don’t play to their full potential when it comes to big games. There was no European captain that had won the Cup before Lindstrom and Chara, who are both defence-men.

No goals in overtime, Sweden win 3-2 in the penalty shootout. The big star of the Finland team Mikael Granlund missed the decisive penalty, though their goalie had a bit of a mare in the 3rd period pretty much gifting Sweden the equalizer.

Canada v Russia next in the second semi final. I’m off to bed though.

Going to Bruins/Devils tomorrow night in Newark, should be a pretty good time as I’m going with a Canadian cousin of mine who absolutely loves Hockey.

Bruins…man i hate them. Still a good game to go too. Good stuff man.

Im so gutted that Canada lost against Russia last night, 6-5! What a scoreline. Was that close to placing a bet on Russia. Should have followed my gut feeling.

Only in Montreal would u see a fan throwing a dildo after a player scored a hat-trick instead of a hat. A change of norm on the way?

Ha, brilliant story.

The Leafs, and more specifically Gustavsson and All-Star pick Dion Phaneuf, shut out The Peg last night. How can anyone possibly be a fan of that new Jets logo?!

Now that is a logo. A vintage effort bettered only by the old Whalers logo. The best current logo is the Wild one, it took me until last year to realise that is actually doubling as a bear’s face. I just thought it was awesome enough as a forest scene, but that bear thing is actually genius.

10 year old Oliver Wahlstrom with another brilliant Pelanty. Chris Waddle would explode if he saw this….

Of course this was his first effort when he was 9.

That wasn’t happening when I was a kid, so we can safely say pelanties are getting harder to save.

The kid is apparently pretty good though, not all flash.
