I was wondering if anyone out there has encountered some really obscure football pundits either on TV or radio.

Im in Nigeria at present and Daniel Amokachi is giving me the pleasure of his wisdom (not VERY obscure, granted).

What im really looking for is a Jason Dozzell or Steve Frogatt giving the uninterested viewers their opinions.

I’ve sat next to Jon McCarthy in the press box at the DW Stadium when Birmingham played Wigan.  He was doing the punditry - and he was great, as it happens.  He also gave me a chocolate button.

Does anyone remember when Ruth Lorenzo was on Revista de La Liga the week after she was eliminated on the X Factor. Needless to say her contribution was limited (Disclaimer: Not sexist!)

Haha thats what im talking about.

Incidentally, Daniel spent a lot of his air time talking about that goal he scored in USA94 and telling a story about how he was once unconscious for 3 days…........what a man

did anyone hear Lou Macari’s almost bizarre cfondemnation of Torres on R5 the other day? Apparently, he’s NEVER rated him, although he then went on to say that if he starts scoring goals, well THEN he’ll rate him. In other words, “doing a Claridge” (changing opinion basically mid-sentence).

Best bit of all was “I know what I’m looking for in a striker” - yes, we all remember what you need in a striker, Lou…. I’ll try to post a clip below if I can find one.

Yes - heard this outburst. Funniest bit was hearing the host (Mark Pougatch, I think, good bloke) doing almost a verbal double-take at the nonsense being spouted forth, and calling on Mark Lawrenson to restore sense (and when Lawro’s become the voice of reason, you know you’re dealing with some heavy shit indeed).

He should stick to looking after his chippy and stop talking bollocks.

Anyone else rate Moritz Volz as a pundit? I though he was pretty good.

The expert that appears on the odd World Football Phone-In epsiode, from Africa. He’s great. I don’t know his name but he’s good… Doesn’t get enough credit in my opinion.

10 years ago the leader of Ireland Bertie Ahern appeared as a pundit on a Premiership highlights progarme.

Yes! Thanks man.

Mark Gleeson has also fulfilled this role to great effect.

As someone who grew up in the north-west in the 80s, how very odd to see Gordon Burns being chosen as the safe pair of hands to conduct Alex Ferguson’s first big BBC interview. While I didn’t exactly think he was dead, I haven’t seen or heard anything from him for years (being out of Manchester) - other than a spoof of the Krypton Factor on the Armstrong and Miller Show.

What next, Sir Michael Winstanley doing a tactics talk with Mario Balotelli? Fred Greaves and Fred Smithies reprising Saint and Greavsie?

I have always found Colin Murray to be a strange choice of sporting host (firstly on Channel 5 then his move to Radio 5 and MOTD). Not because he is particularly bad but because of his route there. I don’t quite follow how you go from cheeky chappy music bloke who presents on a Radio station aimed at 15-25 year old people to the anchorman for football coverage.

Jake Humphrey(F1) and Simon Thomas(Sky Sports) went from kids tv to sport. Always found that a bit weird

Wasn’t a fan of Davie Provan doing the game last night. Were all the other co-comms on holiday or something?

He always had an interest in sport though, which lead him to doing fighting talk, which is pretty light-hearted and doesn’t require a serious presenter. That got him his foot in the door at 5 live. As for the Channel 5 job, I think they were just looking for a presenter that could speak well and had previous experience at presenting, because I think he replaced John Barnes at the time, and Barnes was a bit of a failure as a presenter so they just wanted a safe pair of hands. So it just reached a point where he had to choose betwenn sport and music, and he chose sport and moved to 5 Live permanently, and then got MOTD2 when Chiles fucked off
