Does anyone know of any decent science podcasts. No particular fields but one that discusses new technology / discoveries etc.

Radiolab!

It’s quite sciency, although covers a broad range of topics. I’ve just started listening to it and it’s up there with the best of them. There are hundreds on iTunes and it’s free, so check it out. http://www.radiolab.org/  A good one I listened to recently is “Desperately Seeking Symmetry”

Thanks. I think i’ll start with the episode you suggest.

The infinite Monkey Cage, occasionally Kermode and Mayo and recently The Bugle. Been looking for a satirical news podcast as well. The Bugle does okay, but looking for something more along the lines of Have I Got News For You. Tried Friday Night Comedy but I can’t stand Sandy Toksvig.

Anybody else listen to The Sports Illustrated Soccer Podcast? I’m a big fan of MLS and to get Grant Wahl talking about it is big bonus. Covers the Premier League a bit but mainly sticks to MLS and the National Team.

If you want a podcast that covers all sorts of pop culture (80’s and 90’s mostly) give Lasertime a go.

Dr Karl and the Naked scientists, podcast from 5Live (airs at 3am on a thursday morning i think) This man, @DoctorKarl , is on it and he makes my mind go to jelly. I have a huge collection of these on my i-pod and they have me awestruck with wonder more times than not. really accessible, funny, and easy to listen to. Often get me through a night-shift smile

You can add plenty more of Dr Karl’s podcasts through his ABC podcasts.

Possibly, my sister keeps recommending ‘A Skeptics Guide To The Universe’ but I keep forgetting to listen. She’s very knowledgeable, might be worth a go

Cheers Matt, I’d like to take all the credit for this myself because i’m dead hip & groovy and all that….but whilst i was ploughing the field of the ramble back catalogue it was recommended by….erm lukeymoore rolleyes

Apologies for my last post recommending ‘Skeptics’ when it’d already been suggested, this is because i’d only read the first page of posts like the lazy oaf i am

Because of this thread I’ve started listening to and am really enjoying:

Mysterious universe
The skeptics guide to the universe
Astronomycast
Dr Karl and the naked scientist
Radiolob
The complete guide to everything

So thanks for those recommendations everyone!!

I hope I can find the time to keep up with listening to all of those, plus the 3 I already listened to regularly: Ramble, Daily Bacon and Danny Baker show.

Has anyone listened to A History of the World in 100 Objects on Radio 4? Fantastic stuff.

Clare Balding has just started a series called Sport and the British on R4 as well, good listen!

Many of mine have been mentioned but here goes:-

SPORT - Ramble, The Tuesday Club, The Real Peloton (cycling), Me1 v M2 Snooker, Fighting Talk, USA PTI,

NEWS CURRENT AFFAIRS - The Bugle, Richard Bacon, Friday Night Comedy, More Mayo.

GENERAL STREAM OF CONCIOUSNESS/COMEDY - The Smartest Man in the World, The Complete Guide to Everything, My Brother My Brother & Me, Answer Me This, Frank Skinner.

SCIENCE - Stuff You Should Know.

FILM - Kermode.

And now for the one, that’s really niche.
If you like American sports, politics, news/current affairs, Washington DC and Victor Meldrew, try:-

The Tony Kornheiser Radio Show.

I absolutely love it, although it took ages to get the ‘feel’ of it.
Now it’s the first thing I listen to. One man completely out of step with the 21st century, and roundly abused by his team.

Am currently working my way though the In Our Time podcasts, they don’t get updated alot sadly but there’s quite a lot on itunes and loads on the BBC website. Vast range of topics, all covered in an enlightening manner. Educational.

He takes a while to get to the question, but he does get through some very interesting guests.
Plus he seems to get a fair bit from them, as Bacon is probably my main supplier of new stuff, whether that be TV progs books etc.

The ramble and The Bugle have been the two that I’ve consistently listened to for years. I’ve just got into ‘This American Life’, which is really interesting and informative, also Desert Island Discs if there’s someone that I’m interested in on.

Hey, don’t shoot the messenger, your Postie will deliver it, when it gets to him.

Anyway, back to podcasts, I forgot to mention Danny Baker.
Although dare I say it, I’ve probably listened to him for such a long time, I think I’ve heard all his anecdotes.

As for Danny Baker, I can’t listen to him on a saturday morning without craving a sausage sandwich.

With red sauce, obviously…

I a new convert to Danby Baker, only been listening to him for a few months. Wrongly I always thought of him as a bit of a twat, judging him by the tabloid image of him, Chris Evans and all their drinking buddies. In reality he is, I’ve realised, a bloody good radio DJ.

Also massive fan of the Bugle, my current favourite phrase is ‘Horndoggery’, as applied to Burlesconi.

In Our Time is great, but Melvyn Bragg is the undisputed master of the long-winded, ultimately pointless question. If you like In Our Time, you’ll love A History of the World in 100 Objects.

If you like films then the slashfilmcast is one I quite like and IGN UK for some not too serious video games discussion. Also have you checked out any of the smodcast stuff?

Basically a network of podcasts set up by film director Kevin Smith. A lot of them are hit and miss but they are usually funny and there’s a lot of variety between the shows. Some of the humour is quite crude though so if that’s not your thing then maybe you’d want to give those podcasts a miss.

Kermode and Mayo (Films) is the best non-sports podcast out there in my very humble opinion. Kermode is usually pretty accurate, his last few have been superb, definitely think he improves the more you listen to him.

“....staggeringly, depressingly, un-funny : wouldve been worst film of the week if hadnt been released the same time as “This Means War”

He tore the guy who made “John Carter” a new one as well. 2 hours podcast so pretty long, just flies by though.

I started with this episode and have been addicted to them ever since, thank you for introducing me to this podcast! Some of the stories they tell amazing. A couple of favourites of mine are Evil, Sleep, War of the Worlds and Patient Zero. I think I’ve listened to about 80% of them now!

This week I unsubscribed from a few podcasts, mainly because they were starting to build up quicker than I was listening to them. Now my list is pretty refined but I listen to everything.
Adam and Joe
Answer Me This
The Dave Gorman Podcast
Desert Island Discs (I’m going through the archive of people I’m interested in)
The Football Ramble (obviously)
The Iain Lee Pocket Radio Show (and I still have a lot of his shows from Absolute I am yet to listen to)
The Indoor Kids (about video games. The man co-presenter, Kumail Nanjiani, is a really funny comedian)
Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo’s Film Reviews
The Nerdist (which is an awesome media network, I advice you to listen to the other things they have to offer)
Pappy’s Bangers and Mash
Pappy’s Flatshare Slamdown (which is coming back really soon!)
Robin and Josie’s Utter Shambles (although they’re not in season atm)
The Todd Glass Show (Todd Glass is one of the best comedians going. The regular podcast is hilarious, also, listen to the shows he does about homosexuality, they’re really interesting and everybody should listen to them)
The XFM Breakfast Show with Danny Wallace Podcast

For any of you that enjoy American sports, Americarnage is a rather funny pod that our very own Lukey Moore was on last week.  For any Spurs fans who like the “Away Days” videos on YouTube, he’s one of the main hosts of the show.  As an American, I find it more entertaining listening to English folk talk about the sports I grew up watching.  Less complicated.  American radio hosts dissect a fucking topic to death over here and, to be frank, I don’t think I can take anymore talk about the upcoming NFL Draft.  ALL DAY.  EVERY DAY.  AAAAAAAAAAAARGH
