I don’t know if any of you lot have the faintest interest in American politics, but I do.

The election is exactly a year today, as it happens.

As Mitt Romney manages to flip flop his way to the Republican nomination and, in all likelihood, the presidency, a rather more unorthodox contender has emerged.

Ok, so he appears to have sexually harassed and assaulted a series of female employees while head of the NRA(not that one). Maybe his campaign staff is devised of a bunch of crooks(allegedly) and shady characters who may or may not be guilty of campaign fraud. It may also be true that he proposed an electric fence to keep out illegal immigrants, prisoner swaps with Al Qaeda and has no knowledge of the phrase ‘right of return’ in relation to the Middle East.

All of that may or may not be true. Yet Herman Cain continues to lead the polls for the Republican nomination. The man who named his company ‘The Herminator Experience’.

the fact that Cain is the front-runner shows how shallow the pool of GOP candidates is this time round.
I’ve quite enjoyed watching the debates, if only for some genuine, bonkers wtf-moments like the gay solider who served in Iraq getting booed and Ron Paul getting booed for saying that American shouldn’t blame the whole Muslim population for 9/11.
Cain really does have some prejudiced beliefs though. He’s previously said he doesn’t think it’s discriminatory to ban mosques and that he wouldn’t employ Muslims in his administration because you can’t tell which ones and ‘good’ and which ones are Jihadis. Ron Paul is definitely the smartest candidate, although that’s not saying much.

There was I, thinking I’d brought a little education to the forum and it turns out you ungrateful bastards aren’t satisfied.

I hadn’t seen that campaign video, which is brilliant. Ron Paul is fantastic, but never stood a chance.

Also a fascinating calculator on the NY times website explaining each candidates’ chance of success in different situations

In terms of that last video I do actually agree a little bit. There’s no doubt that the man is mental, but when he says that Sharia law is gradually working it’s way into the western nations he’s right.
Although I don’t necessarily condone everything this man has done by any stretch of the imagination.

absolutely, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve found myself forced to comply with Sharia Law, it’s bloody everywhere these days. Excellent point.

It’s true. My missus didn’t have tea on the table when I got in this evening, so I had to stone her. Difficult, as I’ve only got one hand left.

On the plus side, I no longer pay any interest on my bank loan.

Seriously though, It’s got to the point where to win the GOP nomination, you’ve basically just got to not be a complete moron. There is some absolutely terrifying shit being spouted, and it’s saying something when Ron Paul becomes the smartest and most moderate man in the room. Romney should walk it really, anyone else would just get killed by Obama, unpopular as he is.

You do worry for the States though. These rabble rousers are really just going to end up fucking up their own country. And I bloody love America, so it makes me sad.

the level of debate is shocking these days. If you don’t want to deregulate and privatise absolutely everything then you’re a filthy anti-American socialist. Which is funny cos, in my opinion, stripping away regulation and neo-liberalism in general is basically a discredited ideology after 2008.

I wrote a blog today, which I won’t advertise here, basically saying that in Britain we shouldn’t do down and take for granted our ideological consensus when you look at America and the ridiculousness of the debate there in which a ‘liberal conservative’ here is seen as a socialist practising class politics.

I love the daily show, and if only that sort of discourse permeated all their politics they might have a chance.

RVPCL (or anyone else for that matter) ever read Hegemony or survival - America’s quest for global dominance

Facinating book.

I wonder if the ‘nutty right’ might just be scaring the ‘Bush & cronies right’ for a) not going far enough or b) losing votes to them because of it

Bachman is an odious human being.  She recently said that Iraqis should pay the Familys of dead USA soldiers millions of dollars in compensation.  This republican race is bizare. I never really bought into the thinking Bush and other American presidents and politicions, in particuarly republicans were stupid, but the recent debates really make me question this.

Not a chance any one of the Republican candidates can beat Obama. People may be pissed at him, but they’ll still go vote for him over any of the numpties on the right.

Newt Gingrich is, as Slavoj Zizek put it, “a scum of the earth”. Can’t believe Republicans are on board with a guy who visited his dying wife in hospital and forced her to sign divorce papers so he could marry his mistress.

Newt Gingrich has raced into the lead, despite having some unusual ideas about Obama - Obama’s policies are based around the Kenyan anti-colonialism of his father.

wut?

Newt Gingrich is, as Slavoj Zizek put it, “a scum of the earth”. Can’t believe Republicans are on board with a guy who visited his dying wife in hospital and forced her to sign divorce papers so he could marry his mistress.

Anyone that votes Republican is either evil or a total moron so it is not a great surprise to see him up there I’m just glad the hero of the internet Ron Paul is not in with a chance as I genuinely hate his ideas .  Obama seeming can’t lose against any of them and he has pretty much failed.

It says it all that Newt Gingrich was angling for an endorsement from Herman Cain.

Still think Romney has a great chance of winning, but cant see him beating Obama anyway as he’ll be in a slugfest with Gingrich and the DNC have already made their tactic clear with this beauty:

http://www.mittvmitt.com/

“Experts are predicting kind of a tough fight between Romney and his biggest ideological opponent: Mitt Romney from four years ago. Those guys don’t agree on anything.”

Zing. I did write a blog about this, but I shall not be spamming. I will summise: Romney is a vacuum of human ideas who stands for nothing but that which will get him elected. He has a helluva lot of money, though, and should still pull through as Gingrich either self-implodes or slowly fades.

you should post the blog relevant is not spam

Romney can’t win imo the tea party/bible belt won’t turn out due to his slightly different brand of make believe + the Romneycare thing will kill his attacks on Obama

The gay half-sister of Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has criticised his position on gay rights, saying she will support Barack Obama in the 2012 election.

Wasn’t quite sure where to post this and it seemed more people in the know would see it here…..............

just watched Storyville - Inside Job. A film about how the global economic situation got fucked stage by stage.

You sit there open mouthed at the greed and immorality that pervades the US st the highest levels,  then at the conclusion the mind boggles that not only is no-one prosecuted for their actions (individual or corporate), but that leading players in the glorious cluster-fuck of de-regulation and derivatives ARE NOW EMPLOYED BY THE GOVERNMENT.

Corporate or individual greed should come as no surprise really but Jesus fucking Christ the shameless acts of men and companies shown here make me wonder if I am even the same species as them.

Edit: Has Obama taken no flak at all for his adminisrtations absolute failure to achieve some return to regulatory banking or his appointment of some of the men with the still smoking guns in their hands

Its the Iowa caucus tomorrow ladies and gents. I’m excited.

I’ve written a blog on it, which you can find here: http://politics-matters.com/2012/01/02/republican-presidential-race-the-candidates/

In essence: Romneybot has refound his swagger as Gingrich plummets again; Ron Paul is hilarious (http://entertainment.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/30/9831754-look-back-when-ron-paul-met-bruno) though also quite absurdly extreme and may win iowa but nothing else. Rick Santorum (google santorum people, really) is on the rise with his vehement homophobia and general evangelical idiocy. Nobody else matters.

Any thoughts?
